Dr Sangeetha Makielan is a specialist medical doctor with extensive specialist training in child and adolescent psychiatry (Paediatric Psychiatrist), Dr. Sangeetha Makielan is passionate about working collaboratively with patients and offering a holistic approach to mental health.

 

Dr Makielan:

 

  • Brings more than 15 years of experience in psychiatry to her work with children, adolescents and adults, including new mums. 

  • Having worked as a Child & Adolescent Consultant Psychiatrist (staff-specialist) in public Hospitals including at Westmead Hospital currently runs a private practice with clinics in Baulkham Hills and Sydney.

  • Strongly believes the treatment of children is best when it involves the entire family.

  • Focuses on psychotherapy, using medication only when appropriate and necessary.

  • Believes that the most effective therapy involves a tailor-made approach.

  • Passionate about early Intervention in mental health.

 

 

Training and Qualifications

 

Dr Sangeetha Makielan completed her postgraduate foundation medical training in the United Kingdom before training at the Maudsley in London, UK – the world’s oldest psychiatry institution. 

 

  • Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (FRANZCP)

  • Accredited Member of the Faculty of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (FCAP)

  • Holds an advanced certificate in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry from Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.

  • Member of NSW section of Perinatal and Infant Psychiatry sub-committee of RANZCP.

  • Member of the Faculty of Psychotherapy of RANZCP

  • Registered facilitator of the ‘Circle of Security’ Parenting Program. 

  • Registered facilitator for the ‘Tuning into Teens’ Parenting Program. 

  • Trained in autism diagnosis (ADOS-2 and ADI-R).

  • Extensive training in Psychotherapy. 

  • Registered Facilitator for Westmead Feelings Program 2

 

Dr Makielan’s Inclusive Practice

 

Dr Makielan embraces families from culturally diverse backgrounds. She has worked with remote indigenous communities, speaks Tamil and Hindi. 

Referrals to Dr Makielan

Dr Makielen is open for referrals for short, medium and long-term Psychotherapy and for ongoing psychiatric treatment and management.

 

Dr Makielan does not accept Item 291 or one-off medication review referrals. 
 

Dr Makielan’s Special Interests
 

Psychotherapy (individual, parent-child, adult, family), Attachment-Based Family Therapy (ABFT), Giftedness and twice-exceptionality, Play therapy, Infant and perinatal psychiatry, and Child & Adolescent psychiatry. Dr Makielan also offers mentoring and clinical supervision for psychiatry registrars and early-career psychiatrists.

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family and go for walks with her chocolate Labrador.
